ANK on Nick Cole

Who is Nick Cole?
A gifted engineer, handsome devil, loyal friend, and savior. He is Bella's temptation and Dylan's bane.

Nick's character didn't even exist when I started writing the first draft of The Sphere.
He appeared literally out of nowhere. One day, he stepped out of a dark corner of my mind and politely introduced himself. Once I got over my initial shock and allowed him in, he had no problem convincing me I needed him.
He never left me in any doubt that he came to stay.
Three books into the series and guess what: He is still with me.
And what a character he is!
I took him on board (reluctantly) because I needed him. The story needed him. Bella needed him.
Nick, however, fell for Bella; line, hook, and sinker.
And no matter how many times she floors him - he always gets up. He is a fighter; a survivor. He is my true hero.
I am grateful he had the courage to come and the stamina to stay.
I admire and respect him.
Thank you, Nick!
--------------------------------------------------------------
The man himself:
ANK has a melodramatic outlook when it comes to my person.
Let me get one thing clear: I never volunteered for altruistic reasons.
First, I only agreed to talk to Bella about warp travel because my friend and mentor, Barnes, asked a favor. Second, I wanted to help because the project provided a new and intriguing distraction from life on the space station.
Third - and I hate to admit this - I stupidly fell for Bella - and I couldn't pull out afterward.

What started with butterflies in my stomach and high hopes for a future together almost ended in a disaster. The woman I love has some cruel ways to twist a man around her little finger and break him in the process! I know - I am at the receiving end. Yet - I cannot deny her! I cannot step away from her. I am too bloody weak.
She has a pull I cannot escape; like even light cannot escape the pull of a black hole. That's what Bella is for me: A black hole - relentlessly sucking everything into it. And like a black hole, Bella's gravity is indiscriminate. I know she doesn't do it out of spite. It is her nature. I wish I were stronger... I love her.
I need to get her away from the space station; out of the reach of The Sphere. Make her forget it ever existed; make her forget what it holds inside ever existed. I can do it... I would do anything to win her love. Beg, steal, lie, kill. I only need to build this spaceship. That's all it takes.
Once we are underway, she will be mine.
----------------------------------------------------------------
ANK:
Nick is my most complex character. He causes me massive headaches because he is so unpredictable; yet - he is such a pleasure to work with.
When the story runs dry, Nick steps in to save the day.
Guess it's his paternal ancestry. He cannot deny his genetic predisposition. His father is a handful as well.
I nearly fell flat on my face when he turned up out of the blue!
Those men have a nasty habit of taking me by surprise...
I was blissfully oblivious to Nick's true nature - and so was he.
Enough! Nick's Dad has no doing in The Sphere, but he features prominently in the third book, Homecoming, where he causes a good deal of havoc and upset. Until then, the Sphere-World Series has some life-changing challenges in store for Nick. I am not going easy on him! But that's what he came to volunteer for...
Good luck to you, my friend!

ANK on Dylan

Dylan. Ah, what can I say? He is my beautiful alien. He is pure, true, and eternal.
When I first met him, he was nothing more than a figment of Bella's imagination, and I'd planned to leave him behind inside The Sphere; buried in Bella's past, and kept alive only in her imagination.
But he wasn't going to have any of that!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Turns out ANK got me all wrong at the start. I don't hold it against her - it is confusing to meet new species, and not everybody can wrap their head around the existence of beings who are so different from humans, that they can't perceive them with any of their human senses or scientific sensors. Doesn't mean we don't exist, though. I am no bloody illusion. I am real! I came to meet Bella inside The Sphere, and I came to stay. Period!
I love Bella. I loved her from the first moment I sensed her aura. That was on her sixth birthday when she was allowed inside for the very first time. I waited - more than ten years - before I approached her. Revealing my existence was the scariest thing I ever did! My energy still gets all upset when I think about it. I took a human male form - one I thought she would like. It worked! She fell in love with me. I am the luckiest singular entity in the whole of the universe.
I had to tell her that being with me was dangerous for both of us, but she wanted me nonetheless. It became trickier to conceal our relationship as time passed, and so Bella persuaded me to help design a spaceship, which can travel to Earth. A one-way journey into the unknown.
We need this ship to escape the confinement of The Sphere and the dangers of being found out. Earth will be safer for us. There, I will be able to lead a double life: Blend into the human society as one of them, but also stay connected to the realm of the singular entities.
It is a two-bladed knife. We will be free should we succeed, but building this ship means Bella has to work with Nick Cole - a man she likes a lot and could easily fall in love with. It scares me; I could lose her. There is nothing I can do but meet her inside The Sphere, love her, and make sure I stay one step ahead of Nick.
I was never insecure in all the billions of years since I came into existence right after the Big Bang. I am eternal, I know where the Universe came from, and I know where it is going to. Its path is predictable; I can read its energy, trace the flows of its currents, and follow them through their troughs and sources. I have intimate knowledge and understanding of the energetic environment of the universe. Nothing fazes me; I can navigate singularities, wormholes, and black holes; I can ride on a dark matter wave or an ion-storm.
But what I cannot do is predict how humans, their technology, or their psyche will react with those energetic phenomena that litter the universe, I am so familiar with. I just don't know.
Despite my eternal existence, and my experience, I am not omniscient - and most certainly not omnipotent! I am no god; I am no creator; I am just one of the many children of the Universe. And as such I have my limitations.
Being with Bella makes me acutely aware of my otherness. I never had to live in as a corporeal being before. I am an energy being in my natural form.
I had to get to grips with my human body, and I am still occasionally struggling with my new emotional landscape. I am learning on a daily basis.
"Daily" - one of those words... Time - I never had a need to define it, to live to its tyranny, to worry about it. Time for me just is. Now, I have Bella. And Bella's lifetime is limited; Very limited. 300 years... Tops! Less than a blink of an eye on the timescale of the universe. Then there's me: Eternal, immortal, convicted to roam the universe forever after Bella. How can I possibly go on without her?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#ANK speaking
It hurts me to see Dylan suffer. My confident, self-assured, strong singular entity changed in front of my very eyes into a human. Never had I expected to see him suffer human insecurities, worries, and pains. But not only that - on top of it all, he has to deal with the certainty of losing Bella. Death is not a common concept for singular entities, losing loved ones is something they don't customarily encounter. They are solitary creatures - most never forge close bonds with others; and if they do, they can choose to be together forever, or go their own ways after a while if they so wish.
Staying with Bella is not a choice. It is a necessity; one that has a use-by date stamped onto it. Dylan knows it, but he doesn't allow it to taint their relationship. Giving in to despair is not in his nature. And I love him for his strength.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Took me a while to convince ANK that I am more than a pretty face with a hot physique. She didn't like Bella and me falling in love the way we did.
Some events she never saw coming - and neither did we to be perfectly honest. Some things take even me by surprise; some things even I don't take into account. Lesson learned! It makes me painfully aware, though, how easily we can be tricked into thinking everything is going to be alright, when in fact things are going tits-up.
I am dreading the journey ahead! The Sea of Dark Matter might swallow us; the universe might throw us so far off course that we cannot make it back in a human lifetime. I am aware that I can't predict events to come; I can't even influence them from within The Odyssey. That's the name of the spaceship, which will take us back to Earth (read a preview here).
I feel guilty for deceiving Nick. In his world taking Bella on this journey will get her away from me. This is his motivation - she is his reason d'etre. He loves her; not as much as I love her - but he doesn't know that yet. He doesn't know that Bella is not his destiny; and yet - I hope - that, should anything ever happen to me, he will take care of her, and make her - if not forget me - forget the pain of losing me.
But this is stuff that may or may not in an unknown future, and I don't like to speculate; I am scared of what lies ahead.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

P.S. I am planning to publish The Odyssey as #Amazon #eBook and #paperback within the next four to six weeks.
Plenty of time to read book 1 of the Sphere-World Series. The Sphere is available on all #Amazon marketplaces.

ANK on Bella ΞΙ

So – here we are again.
I promised a while ago in this blog to introduce the main characters from my book The Sphere.
And I tried to do them justice; I thought about the „right“ words, the „right“ pictures to paint – and I can't bloody wrap my head around them!
So I decided to enter a dialogue with them; let them do the explaining – me being more of a facilitator than the person who writes about them.
After all: They are their own people, and they should be allowed to tell their own story.
Over to you guys!

Hi, I am Bella ΞΙ - my surname is pronounced Xsi. I live on Space Station Δ9 – which is undoubtedly humanities most remote outpost in space – so remote, that 5,000 years ago, a cataclysmic wormhole collapse left Space Station Δ9 stranded in outer space. We do not know what happened to Earth over those millennia. We are out of reach; we are out of communication.

You first meet me as a 16-year-old. But don't be fooled by my tender age! I am an adult - physically and mentally. Early maturation is a trait of us space-stationers; a trait that developed over the millennia.
I am a fully trained historian. I learned my trade from my parents and grandparents. I love history and value the truth; that's why I try my best to create an accurate account of our history – back on Earth as far as we know it, and here on the Space Station. I am still hoping that one day we might be able to reconnect with humankind.
My ability as a historian to paint pictures of environments we have never seen, and my love for keeping things true and realistic, pushed me into my job as a "Sphere interior designer".
Now, let me explain:
The Sphere is an artifact of unknown origin, a creator of unreality, yet beautiful in its appearance, unrivaled; an inspiration and an enigma alike. Something that could be real, but isn’t.

I am happy with my life. Content with the direction it is going. I am comfortable in my own skin. I take great pride in my job and love to help people create the perfect Sphere-World to find happiness and their true calling. I know how important that is. Because I found mine: I help people, I seek the truth.
I look after animals – two horses and a dog. I take them inside The Sphere for five human seconds every day. Five precious seconds, which expand to five days inside the unique interior of The Sphere. It is the world where I love to be, my dream, my life, my Utopia. A remote area in British Columbia served as the blueprint. There, it is just me and the animals. The Sphere doesn't allow more than one human being inside at the same time. Life inside The Sphere is solitary – and not every space stationer can stand it.

I could have lived my life like this forever and ever. But The Sphere threw me a curveball.

His name is Dylan. I met him inside The Sphere, and he turned my life, my beliefs, my values – everything! - upside down. He changed me; he changed my outlook. He also fused us together, and now, we are part of each other's life. Inseparable. Some might call it a parasitic existence. To us, it is a perfect symbiosis.
He is one of the many children of the Universe – a singular entity – a life form, that came into existence 15 billion years ago, shortly after the Big Bang.

And no - I didn't make a mistake by pegging the age of our universe at 15 billion years rather than the generally accepted 13.8. Dylan gives the [purely fictional!] explanation in the book.
He got attracted by my „aura“ - my unique energy signature, which to him is as irresistible as pollen to a bee.
I fell for him – fast and hard. We committed to each other. I trust him with my life.

There is a catch or two involved, though. Life is never easy – or so they say.
Well – it used to be on the space station, where routines are upheld and valued, stagnancy is security, and changes and challenges are treated with the utmost suspicion and outright fear.
Things flipped upside down, once Dylan entered my life.

For starters: Dylan broke his species' laws by being with me. In the eyes of singular entities, I am a minor life form. His punishment for engaging with me is a slow and agonizing death by energy starvation.
Secondly, by the law of the space station, I am not allowed to have sex before my 18th birthday. I was unconcerned about this restriction because what happens inside The Sphere stays inside The Sphere. I was prepared to lie and hide to have Dylan!
He, however, insisted on obeying our laws, because if he made me break them, I would be exterminated as well; for tainting my own culture or such.

We can only meet inside the safety of The Sphere; five human days at a time. The Sphere's unique time conundrum stretches the time until my 18th birthday to the unbearable.
I - the happy, content teenager became worried for my alien boyfriend's safety, disgruntled because of the wait, edgy, and restless. I feel guilty for having to conceal my love for Dylan from my parents. Lying is something alien to a space stationer born and bred.

The very fabric of my values and beliefs changed so dramatically, that I had a hard time coping.
I became so dissatisfied that I started looking for solutions to get away from the confinement of The Sphere and the restrictions of the space station. I wanted to escape and go back to Earth.
I sought ways to build a spaceship, which was capable of making the journey back to Earth; a distance of five billion light years. Impossible, because we didn't have the technology for faster than light travel, and because of the psychological makeup of our small society.
Isolation in outer space triggered the development of a subspecies of the human race: psychologically and physiologically altered, self-sufficient with a need for high levels of redundancy, and lacking the pioneering spirit, which brought our ancestors to outer space.

I am stubborn. I am resourceful. And giving up has never been an option for me. I convinced Dylan that leaving the space station and The Sphere behind was the only option for finding happiness, freedom, and peace. Earth, I reasoned, was big enough to go undercover, and blending into the human society would allow us to go undetected from Dylan's species.

I started to make inquiries about faster than light travel. I asked an old friend of mine – emphasis on „old“, but he couldn't or wouldn't help me personally. He introduced me to Nick Cole, a young engineer; sinfully handsome, and adventurous like myself.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#ANK speaking

...and then came the point, when the woman started to confuse me. She veered off my carefully planned plot and started to show me her weak side; a side I didn't know she had! She stopped playing ball and started to do her own thing; reluctantly - because she is a space-stationer and used to obeying the strict rules of people who cannot afford high levels of individualism. And reluctantly I had to let her pick her own way. It was necessary because the whole endeavour of engineering a warp driven spaceship and undertaking a journey through uncharted parts of the universe requires them to cut loose from social and emotional tethers. It requires leaving behind the safety of the cocoon of the space station and embrace the unknown. There is no safety net! Bella realises that, and tries her best to adapt; change her rules; live outside her comfort zone.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anathea is right: I lost my initial devil-may-care attitude, the cockiness, which was born of a life where there was nothing to lose. And I think that was exactly the reason why I changed: Once Dylan and I fell in love, I had everything to lose! The prospect left me fearful and worried. I lost my fearless approach to life, my openness, my truth - because I couldn't afford to tell the truth without putting Dylan's existence in danger. Dylan turned out to be my weakness - my Achilles heel. I cannot live without him. To keep him safe, I had to choose between my almost inherent need for the truth and lying to her friends and family.
I suffered a major emotional conflict - a brutal split of my life into alternate realities, which are unreconcilable; oil and water. Parts of me resented Dylan for it – parts of me hated myself for resenting him. I didn't understand it; how could it be? I sometimes wished I'd stayed on Anathea's plotted path. But that's not me anymore! It's my choice, my life, my responsibility.

And then there was Nick. I liked him from the moment I saw him. He is fantastic – charming, funny, and oh so handsome. I said it before: If it weren't for Dylan, I would be with Nick.
We started to work on a blueprint for a warp driven spaceship. A ship capable of traveling many magnitudes faster than light. A ship which could get us to Earth within a human lifespan. An impossible feat with our existing technology – or the lack of a wormhole.
Nick can look outside the box. Hell! He can step outside the box and with a little help from Dylan, he managed to design a conceptual warp driven spaceship, capable of traveling a billion times faster than light.
He designed it for me! He conceived this ship it to get me away from The Sphere. He learned of Dylan's existence. Dire circumstances forced me to confide in him. I had to – for Dylan's sake. He thinks, Dylan is a figment of my imaginary world inside The Sphere. A rare anomaly, but an anomaly nonetheless. In Nick's world, getting me as far away from The Sphere as fast as possible, was tantamount to extricating me from Dylan; and getting the chance of making me his.
I can't be his! Never“ But Nick needs to believe in the possibility; I need to string him along. It hurts me. I hate myself for it. It isn't right. But what can I do? My hands are bound by the need to keep Dylan safe.
To make our spaceship happen, we must scheme and lie, betray and hurt others.
I must grow a thicker skin or lift Dylan's secret. There is no other solution.

Next time I will let Dylan speak about his take on things.
Until then, enjoy #reading and #writing your own stories.

The Sphere is available as ebook and printversion from Amazon.

ANK on "Who are they?"

I suppose most authors get asked the same questions:
Where do you get your ideas from?
Who are the real-life people who inspire your characters?
What goes on in your mind?
WOAW! Let's put that one straight right now ☺ It's not so much my mind that comes up with everything and anything. My mind provides a seed for the story, and my characters then take it further. I am only the monkey at the keyboard ☺ Honest!

The ideas that seed a story are plentiful and present themselves in abundance almost every day.

The magic ingredients, the heart and soul of the story, are my characters.
How they work their way through the story; their unique way of dealing with a situation (which is generally very different from how I envisaged it!); their values, fealties, and allegiances. They take me by surprise every time. And I am still getting used to it. But there you go.
I don't want to put too many labels on my protagonists - namely Bella, Dylan, and Nick - or even on the supporting characters. But I will try to write a short piece about each of them over the coming weeks. To get you acquainted with them. They are precious to me, and I want them to be known and understood.
You can meet them in The Sphere before they go on the long journey home in The Odyssey.
These people undergo massive personal changes as they progress their journey over the Sphere-World series.
Nothing stays the same; once the die has been cast nobody can stop it from rolling! Circumstances change, and changing circumstances shape the people. Even eternal alien beings are not immune to the unforeseeable forces of the unpredictable universe. Good luck, guys! You will need it.

The Sphere is available from Amazon and free for #kindleunlimited subscribers.
The Odyssey is was up for nomination on #kindlescout; You can still read the excerpt.

Enjoy a happy festive reading-season!

ANK on What genre...?

A headscratcher for me! Well and truly is...
A crucial one as well. Because peddling my books to the wrong people will never earn me satisfied and returning readers.
So I need to get this right.
Easier said than done.
I can, of course, describe what my books are all about on (social) media outlets, but I cannot position them adequately on Amazon (where I list it) because my genre (or even subgenre) isn't acknowledged.
Keywords it is then.
But honestly... who types sophisticated keywords into Amazon search engines? I don't (but perhaps I will start after writing this post - you never know!)

I started to write The Sphere - part of the Sphere-World Series, during #Nanowrimo2016. By now it has developed into a full-blown series.
Honestly, I had no idea it would.

When I started writing it, I took my least developed plot and decided to see if I could actually write 50k words in a month. I never thought I had it in me. But I did! Now - a year later and The Sphere is published in ebook format on #Amazon worldwide.
The second book in the series is called The Odyssey, and I am planning on getting it onto the #KindleScout programme soonish.
I did the same thing with The Sphere, and I enjoyed the process.

Before and during the Kindle Scout campaign, when I read lots of 'how to' and 'what to' and 'what-not-to' articles, I became aware of the importance of stamping a genre onto my book. (There is some great advice out there! Make use of it.)

Gulp... Science Fiction...obviously! Or so I thought. But the novel contains a lot of romantic elements as well, and a bit of dystopian fiction. It also hints at elements of fantasy to come as the Sphere-world series develops.
And yes - there will be a whole lot of fantasy, and science, and sci-fi.
The Sphere is a novel of mixed genres. <ANK on The Sphere>
But most importantly, it is the story of the main characters; the tale of the challenges they have to face, the obstacles they have to overcome, their struggles, their hopes, and dreams, and failures. It is about how they cope with changes, and how they fight to make their dreams come true - no matter the genre!

The Cover for The Sphere

People asked me:
Where did I get the cover for The Sphere from? And what does it mean?
Honestly? It started as a bit of a joke.
Remember the first images the Hubble Space Telescope sent back to NASA.?The HST was sent to space way back in April 1990. Wooo! That's a good while ago.
Naturally - as soon as images came back, scammers weren't far. See - 'Fake News' is not an invention of this millennium.
And there was this iconic image of Earth cradled in clouds (Google it!). Nobody knows exactly, where it originated from or when. And although the Hubble Space Telescope has given us incredible images and insights into outer space <HST images>, this particular one wasn't taken by Hubble!
To cut a long story short:
The iconic image of “Earth in a Cradle of Clouds” was allegedly taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. It made a huge impact on the internet but later turned out to be ‘fake news’.
I chose this image, altered it a bit myself. I like this image. I think it is striking, but at the same time, it creates a false impression – just like The Sphere creates an environment based solely on the imagination of whoever uses her.
Nothing is real!
I chose the cover as an allegory for all that The Sphere stands for: unknown origin, a creator of unreality, yet beautiful; it is an inspiration and an enigma alike. Something that could be real, but isn’t.
Since The Sphere is an artificial environment and creates virtual realities based on the user's imagination, I thought it a fitting tongue-in-cheek jest, to take a beautiful - if faked - image of Earth (the ultimate goal for Bella,  and Nick), add some digital embellishments to it, and use it as the cover for my book.
That's really it as a formula:
A bit of fun + awesome image (it does look dramatic - no doubt about it!) = stunning cover for a hopefully interesting book.

ANK on The Sphere

The Sphere is novel of mixed genres, consisting of mainly sci-fi adventure and romance. It contains dystopian elements and hints at the fantasy-to-come as the Sphere-World series develops.
Mix, shake well and enjoy the ride - ah, sorry - read!

I wanted to create an environment, where a pocket of humankind survived for thousands of years without any contact to Earth, without input from the outside world, without even the possibility to go back, where they came from!
I wanted to explore the challenges they have to face, and their ways to deal with them.
I wanted to get into the mind of people, who learned to live with claustrophobia, stagnancy, boredom, and the cramped conditions on a space station, where there are no secrets, no surprises and nothing out of the usual.
I wanted to see how a society would develop when faced with a situation, where ‘leaving for pastures greener’ is just not an option.
What would happen? How long would they be content to live like animals in the artificial confines of a zoo? What needs to happen to shake them up and get their backside off the settee so to speak?

And what would they be doing?
Where would they be going to?
Would you like to know? If the answer is 'yes', get a copy from #Amazon worldwide.
The ebook is available to download for free for #kindleunlimited subscribers. I will also run some 'freedays' and keep you updated on those!

ANK on the Kindle Scout campaign

Day one is over, and I am looking forward to seeing the stats for the first time!
They are updated on a daily basis and so for the first 24 hours, I was flying blind.
Nervewrecking!
Not that I have high expectations, but one can always hope – right?
Oh well – what will it be then?
Not that it matters much since I don’t have any benchmarks – either negative or positive. I think the scientist in me is trying to break to the surface and ‘make sense’ of it all. Yeah… so not going to happen!

Anyway: Logged on, stats checked, data acquired, mulled over and?

... looks like I was a bit over-eager and checked in too early! No updates ... so more coffee and waiting game. Took the dog out for a walk, had some more coffee ...
Finally! Stats update
51 total page views so far.
That's all right with me :-) That's much, much better than nothing!

If you haven't had the chance to read the excerpt yet, please have a look on Kindle Scout <The Sphere>
And if you like, please nominate.

On an endnote: I am actually glad that the stats only get updated once per day. I would be sitting glued to my campaign page otherwise.

The Sphere is loose!

Can't believe I did it!
My first ever novel is out for scrutiny and I am so thrilled!
It is called "The Sphere". For the curious, an excerpt is available on Kindle Scout The Sphere. If you think it is for you, please read the excerpt, and if you like it, consider nominating it for publication.
The campaign will run from August 12, 2017, 12:00 AM EDT and will end on September 11, 2017, 12:00 AM EDT.

The Sphere is a sci-fi novel in essence, but it would be nothing without the characters, who live and evolve inside its fictional world!
... and because I am a hopeless romantic, there is a lot of it going on in this book - but don't expect your standard Happily Ever After scenario, because you might be disappointed.
I think emotions and feelings, are brilliant hooks to create tension and suspense. Strong emotions force us to do things, they propel us forwards, they drive, they have the power to bring us to our knees, and make us get up again.

The Sphere is part sci-fi, part romance, part dystopia.
Mix, shake well and enjoy the read!
